Flash Eurobarometer 328: Survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism - Wave 3 ,

Increasing number of Europeans enjoy their holidays: only 4% said they would not go on holiday in 2011, which is a significant improvement compared to 2010 when 20% of Europeans had no plans for holidays. These findings of a new Eurobarometer survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism confirm other indicators that tourism has fully recovered from economic crisis. EU citizens' preference still inclines towards traditional tourist destinations (58%), while 28% would choose to discover the hidden treasures of Europe.

This Flash Eurobarometer survey (Flash Eurobarometer 281 on the “Survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism, Autumn 2009” was conducted at the request of Directorate General Enterprise and Industry to collect EU citizens’ views on travel, details of their (planned) holidays and travel in 2009 and their expectations regarding holidays in 2010. Some 80% of Europeans continue to travel for their holidays according to a new Eurobarometer survey on ‘The attitudes of Europeans towards tourism 2010’. Only 20% of over 30,000 randomly selected citizens were almost certain that they will not travel in 2010, which is significantly below the proportion of non-travellers in 2009 (33%). EU citizens increasingly prefer to spend their holidays in traditional tourist destinations (57%), while 28% would rather go “off the beaten track” to emerging destinations.
